Philosophically Reflecting
Ability to grasp a wide variety of concepts is a developed attribute of the human mind—the nature of schooling, which presents diverse topics for a student to engross themselves within, aids in the growth of this capability of multiple thought processes. In this ethics class, Professor Wood has given us students a multitude of philosophic theories and ideas, further assisting to expand this diversity of thought within gained by individual classes of a schooling experience. Having a variety of methods of thinking allows one to approach a problem that is presented in different ways to be able to obtain a sound solution. Just as a student is taught of science to provide an analytical tool of thinking, art to provide a creative alternative; in this ethics class, we students were provided with Deontology to consider issues with logic, and sentiment to use feelings for contemplation. Without multiple ways to reflect on an idea, the ease of neglecting important variables would be overwhelming. Throughout the course of a scholars education, many tools are gained to provide diversity of problem solving methods which prevent one from becoming caught in the same manner of thinking for every situation. Being able to consider an issue from several perspectives provides a wholesome understanding of what gives complexity to the issue, rather than immediately forming a set opinion based on very little consideration.
Growth and refinement of the ability for thought itself is what makes a human being’s rationality a powerful tool for gaining knowledge of the world. This philosophy class of personal ethics has enlightened methods in which thought may be employed to make the decisions which define one’s existence.
